Cochran Lineage: Upward Research from Benjamin T. Cochran

Researched 2026-10-25. Scope: deceased ancestors and public historical records only. No birth dates, addresses, or contact details were looked up for living people, and people-search aggregators were not used for living people. Every fact below carries its source. Facts are split into VERIFIED and CANDIDATE. Nothing was guessed to fill a gap.

Bottom line

  1. The Acousticom anchor is verified: Benjamin T. Cochran and Jean A. Cochran founded Acousticom Corporation in Elkhart, Indiana, in October 1980, and Jean A. Cochran later served as its president.
  2. A strong candidate identity for Benjamin T. Cochran was found in public death and cemetery records: a Benjamin Cochran born April 13, 1933, died July 1981, last residence Elkhart, Indiana, buried at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger, Indiana. If he is Joel's grandfather, he died about nine months after founding Acousticom, which fits the family account on file that the company passed from Benjamin to Jean and later to Mark.
  3. That same candidate Benjamin appears to be the son of a South Bend couple, Benjamin Cochran (burial record 1892 to 1959, same Granger cemetery) and Leora (Etter) Cochran, who ran Cochran's Grocery on Sorin Street in South Bend. Two of their daughters' obituaries name a brother Benjamin who died before them. This would give Joel a full extra generation, but the link is NOT yet proven. Section 3 lists exactly what would prove or kill it.
  4. Jean A. Cochran's maiden name, dates, and parents were NOT found. She remains the biggest open gap.
  5. No generation above the elder Benjamin (1892 to 1959) could be verified from public web sources.

1. Verified chain (what is actually proven)

Generation 1: Joel Cochran

Generation 2: Mark Cochran

Generation 3: Benjamin T. Cochran and Jean A. Cochran (Joel's grandparents)

VERIFIED:

NOT verified for this generation (see Sections 3 and 4): Benjamin's birth date, birthplace, death date, burial, the meaning of the initial "T", Jean's maiden name, and either of their parents.

2. The candidate chain: strong, but not proven

Candidate identity for Benjamin T. Cochran: Benjamin Cochran, 1933 to 1981

Candidate parents: Benjamin Cochran (Sr.) and Leora (Etter) Cochran of South Bend

Candidate chain, drawn out

3. Why the candidate is strong, why it is not proof, and what settles it

Evidence that fits:

  1. Name and place: the SSDI Benjamin's last residence is Elkhart (46514), the city where Acousticom sits (46517) and where Benjamin T. worked.
  2. Timing: Acousticom was founded in October 1980. A founder who died in July 1981 explains the succession Joel described: Benjamin, then Jean, then Mark.
  3. Generation math: a man born in 1933 is the right age to be the father of Mark, whose son Joel was born in 1986. Sibling spacing in the South Bend family (1927, 1930, 1933) is regular.
  4. Family plot pattern: the 1933 to 1981 Benjamin is buried in the same cemetery as his candidate parents and both candidate sisters (Betty and Bernice were both buried at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park per their obituaries).
  5. No competing Benjamin Cochran of the right age, place, and era was found in Indiana records searched (see rejected candidates, Section 5).

What is missing (why this stays a candidate):

Records that would prove or kill the link, in order of power:

  1. Indiana death certificate for Benjamin Cochran, died July 1981, Elkhart County. Indiana death certificates of that era name the spouse, parents, birthplace, occupation, and employer. A spouse named Jean, a parent pair of Benjamin and Leora, or an Acousticom connection settles it either way. Available through the Indiana State Department of Health / Elkhart County Health Department for eligible family.
  2. His obituary, most likely in the South Bend Tribune or The Elkhart Truth, July 1981. The St. Joseph County Public Library obituary index (SJCPL) covers the South Bend Tribune and can be searched by name and year.
  3. St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park cemetery office records for the Cochran plots (both Benjamins, and whether Jean is buried there too). Plot ownership and next-of-kin fields often name the spouse.
  4. The 1940 and 1950 US Census households for Benjamin and Leora Cochran in South Bend. The 1950 census should list children Betty, Bernice, and Benjamin (age about 17) at home, and gives each person's birthplace plus the parents' birthplaces, which is the standard bridge to the generation above. Public census indexes were searched by name through general web search without a hit; a direct name search at the National Archives 1950 Census site (1950census.archives.gov) or FamilySearch is the next step.
  5. His Social Security application (Form SS-5, requested with Form SSA-711). An SS-5 gives the applicant's full name at birth, birthplace, and both parents' names, which would confirm the Leora Etter link and the middle name in one document. Background on what an SS-5 contains and how to order one: https://www.geneamusings.com/2014/09/obtaining-social-security-application.html
  6. Benjamin and Jean's marriage record (likely St. Joseph or Elkhart County, mid 1950s). It would give Jean's maiden name and both parties' parents.

4. Jean A. Cochran: open file

VERIFIED about Jean: co-founder of Acousticom, October 1980, and later its president (sources in Section 1). That is all that is verified.

NOT found, despite targeted searches of Legacy.com, Mishawaka/Elkhart/South Bend funeral homes, Find a Grave, cemetery indexes, and SSDI mirrors:

Disambiguation, important: the often-matching record is a DIFFERENT woman.

What would unlock Jean's line: her marriage record to Benjamin (maiden name plus parents), or, if she is deceased, her Indiana death certificate or an obituary under her maiden or married name. Joel or Mark supplying her maiden name, birthplace, or where she grew up would cut this search from open-ended to a single lookup.

5. Rejected candidates (checked, do not re-merge)

6. Ancestry tree by Mark Cochran

Joel believes his dad Mark started a family tree on Ancestry.com. Per Joel's decision on 2026-10-25, this research proceeded WITHOUT that tree, and it will be used later only as a comparison against these independent findings. For the record: repeated public-index searches (site-restricted Ancestry searches for "Benjamin T Cochran", "Jean A Cochran" family trees, and Mark Cochran of Elkhart/Mishawaka) returned no tree name, owner username, or public/private status for any such tree. Nothing about Mark's tree should be assumed until it is actually seen. If it is private, access would require an invite or collaborator access from Mark's account, or a GEDCOM export from him.

7. What could not be found, and the record that unlocks each item

  1. Benjamin T. Cochran's confirmed birth/death/burial. Status: strong candidate found (April 13, 1933 to July 1981, Elkhart, Granger burial), unproven. Unlock: his 1981 Indiana death certificate, or his July 1981 South Bend Tribune / Elkhart Truth obituary via the SJCPL obituary index.
  2. The meaning of the "T" in Benjamin T. Cochran. Unlock: the same death certificate, his SS-5, or his marriage record, all of which give the full middle name.
  3. Benjamin's obituary. None found online; 1981 Indiana newspaper obituaries are poorly web-indexed, so absence online is not proof none exists. Unlock: SJCPL obituary index lookup, then the Tribune microfilm/digital archive for July 1981.
  4. Jean A. Cochran's maiden name, dates, parents, and status. Unlock: the Benjamin/Jean marriage record; or Jean's death certificate if deceased; or the maiden name supplied by Joel or Mark.
  5. The elder Benjamin Cochran's (1892 to 1959) parents and birthplace, and Leora (Etter) Cochran's parents and dates. No obituary for either was found online. Unlock: the elder Benjamin's 1959 Indiana death certificate (names parents and birthplace), Leora's death record or obituary, their marriage record (likely St. Joseph County, early to mid 1920s), and the 1930/1940 census households in South Bend.
  6. Any generation above the elder Benjamin, and any US arrival or immigration record for this Cochran line. Nothing verifiable was found, and no generic Cochran clan history was substituted. Unlock: the elder Benjamin's birthplace from his death certificate or census entries. If he was born in Indiana or another US state, the line continues through US census and county records state by state; an immigration record only becomes a realistic target once a foreign birthplace is actually documented for a specific person.
  7. The 1940/1950 census household page for Benjamin and Leora Cochran. Unlock: a direct name search at 1950census.archives.gov or FamilySearch (free accounts), which general web search does not index well.

8. Recognition questions for Joel (fastest way to confirm or kill the candidate)

Joel has said he has given all he has, so these are recognition prompts, not recall demands. A yes to any of the first four would strongly support the candidate chain:

  1. Does Cochran's Grocery, or Sorin Street in South Bend, ring any bell from family stories?
  2. Did your dad or grandma ever mention aunts named Betty (Reeder) or Bernice (Ricker) in South Bend?
  3. Do you know whether your grandpa Ben died young, around 1981, not long after Acousticom started? That timing is exactly what the candidate record shows, and it matches the Benjamin to Jean to Mark succession you described.
  4. Any Catholic / St. Joseph Church (South Bend) connection on your dad's side? Both candidate sisters' funerals ran through South Bend parishes.
  5. Anything at all about Jean: a maiden name, where she grew up, or whether she is still living. Any one of those closes the biggest gap in this report.
