Line B, Wave 2: Etter / Cropsey Records Pull, Cass County, Michigan

Research date: October 25, 2026. Free public sources only. No paid sources, no Ancestry, no library fee requests. Deceased people only.

Targets: Lewis A. Etter and Jane (Cropsey) Etter, parents of Leora Belle (Etter) Cochran (Apr 29, 1898 – May 1989); their Michigan death certificates; their marriage record; their 1900 and 1910 census households; John C. Etter (1817–1883) as Lewis's candidate father; Leora's exact death day and her siblings.

Labels used below:

0. Headline results (what changed since wave 1)

  1. Lewis A. Etter's Michigan death certificate EXISTS and is located. Archives of Michigan / Michiganology (Preservica), Death Certificates 1897–1952, asset 005363576_01519, folder path 1928 → Cass County → A–M → Etter → Lewis A. The FamilySearch index of the same certificate (Michigan Death Certificates, 1921–1952, record KFHW-BTJ, film 005363576, image 1519) gives the indexed facts: Lewis A Etter, born 28 Sep 1854, died 2 Jan 1928 in Volinia, Volinia Township, Cass, Michigan, son of John Etter. The certificate image itself could not be transcribed by text fetch (see section 2 for exactly why, and what a live browser session must do).
  2. Jane Etter's Michigan death certificate also EXISTS and is located. Same collection, asset 005363576_00943, folder path 1925 → Cass County → A–M → Etter → Jane. So a Jane Etter died in Cass County in 1925, three years before Lewis. Her certificate image is likewise untranscribed (section 2). This is the single highest-value untranscribed document in this line: a Michigan death certificate of that era names the deceased's parents, spouse, informant, and burial place.
  3. John C. Etter as Lewis's father is UPGRADED from candidate to verified-by-record-index. Two independent record indexes tie them: Lewis's death certificate index names his father as John Etter, and the 1880 census index lists Lewis A Etter (26), single, works on farm, as son in the household of John Etter (63) in Marcellus, Cass, Michigan. Lewis's mother is still unknown (WikiTree states this explicitly).
  4. Lewis's burial is FOUND: Bly Cemetery, Marcellus. Wave 1 could not place him. Find a Grave Memorial #111164669 and a BillionGraves headstone record (Lewis A. Sr. Etter, 1854–1928, Bly Cemetery, headstone photo taken 18 Nov 2016) both put him there.
  5. Leora's siblings are IDENTIFIED for the first time. From the birth, marriage, and death record indexes assembled on Lewis's WikiTree profile (each citing a FamilySearch record): Ezra G. Etter (b. 26 May 1880), twins Verna Etter and De Verne R. Etter (both b. 17 Mar 1886), Ellsworth J. Etter (married from 1908), Ernest L. Etter (b. Nov 1892), Leora B. Etter (b. 29 Apr 1898), and a Lewis A. Etter Jr. (b. 5 Jan 1906, relationship as indexed; see the caution in section 6).
  6. The 1900, 1910, and 1920 census households are LOCATED as record indexes (Lewis head of household in Volinia Township in all three), though the full household member lists live on the census images and were not readable by fetch. Citations in section 5.
  7. Leora's exact death day is narrowed but not pinned by this lane: a companion SJCPL Obituary Index pull (filed at ~/workspace/family-tree/sjcpl-cochran-index-full.md) found South Bend Tribune notices on 05/03/1989 (p. C6) and 05/04/1989 (p. D15), address N. Sunnyside Ave., bracketing her death to about May 1–2, 1989. The index gives publication dates only.
  8. The Lewis + Jane marriage record is still NOT FOUND (section 4), and no record found in this pass names Jane's maiden name. "Cropsey" remains the on-file family statement from wave 1, not a record-verified fact. Jane's own 1925 death certificate is the record most likely to settle it.

1. Lewis A. Etter — verified record trail

Primary source for this section: WikiTree profile Etter-844, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Etter-844 (profile last edited 21 Aug 2024). The profile itself is a secondary compilation, but every fact below is one of its cited FamilySearch record indexes, and the record ID is given for each so any later pass can pull the underlying record directly. Treat the facts as VERIFIED AT INDEX LEVEL.

2. The Michigan death certificates — located, NOT yet transcribed (blocker documented)

What was found

Collection: Archives of Michigan Digital Collections (Michiganology / Preservica), "Death Certificates 1897–1952" — about 1.6M records for 1921–1952; images 1921–1948, index-only 1949–1952. Collection page: https://michigan.access.preservica.com/death-certificates-1897-1952/

Why the certificates are not transcribed here

Exactly what a live browser session must do (next step, in order)

  1. Open Lewis's asset: https://michigan.access.preservica.com/uncategorized/IO_d84a32b3-18b1-4192-a482-a4e91aabfcd2/ — wait for the Preservica image viewer to load image 005363576_01519, zoom, and transcribe every field: full name, death date and place, age/birth date and birthplace, marital status and spouse, occupation, father's name and birthplace, mother's maiden name and birthplace, informant name/address, burial place and date, cause of death.
  2. Do the same for Jane's asset: https://michigan.access.preservica.com/uncategorized/IO_f644858a-fae6-48e5-aa3e-a02b2faa7433/ — image 005363576_00943 (1925, Cass). Her certificate is the priority of the two: it should state her maiden name (testing "Cropsey"), her parents' names and birthplaces, her spouse (expected: Lewis), her informant (often a child — a sibling name for Leora), and her burial place (expected: Bly Cemetery, beside where Lewis was buried in 1928 — to be proven, not assumed).
  3. Fallback if Preservica's viewer resists: the same images are on FamilySearch as film 005363576, image 1519 (Lewis) and the corresponding 1925 Cass County image for Jane (her film/image numbers were not captured because the record page returned 403; a signed-in FamilySearch session can search "Michigan Death Certificates, 1921–1952" for Jane Etter, Cass, 1925). FamilySearch is free with a registered account.

3. Jane (Cropsey) Etter — status

VERIFIED (index level)

NOT FOUND for Jane

4. Marriage record: Lewis Etter + Jane — NOT FOUND

5. Census households — located as indexes; full member lists NOT retrieved

Lewis & Jane, 1900 and 1910 (target 4, first half)

John C. Etter, 1860/1870 (target 4, second half) — the father test

6. Leora's siblings — VERIFIED at index level (new this pass)

All from the FamilySearch record indexes compiled on Etter-844 (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Etter-844). In birth order:

ChildBirthLater records (index level)
Ezra G. Etter26 May 1880, Volinia, Cass, MI (Michigan Births, record NQ4G-QRL; County Births, QP7N-3326)Married Pearl Shoemaker, 17 Jan 1906, Cass, MI (Michigan Marriages, records FC21-GMX / FCNM-LZL / N3JH-QNH). Note: Pearl W. Etter (1888–1969) at Bly Cemetery (wave 1) is plausibly his wife — CANDIDATE link. A Preservica search also shows an "Ezra D Etter" death certificate filed under Kalamazoo — untested.
Verna Etter (also indexed Vernia; twin of De Verne)17 Mar 1886, Volinia Twp. (records NQ89-ZXY, QP3H-44YL, others)Married Chester William Colborn, 22 Feb 1911, Volinia Twp. (record N3KP-JKQ). Died 20 Nov 1923 at Kalamazoo State Hospital per the Michigan Death Certificates index (record KF3F-ZXR, film 005237774, image 1057), which names her father as "Louis Etter." Discrepancy flagged: the Preservica search table lists "Colborn / Verna" under place Kalkaska, not Kalamazoo. Unresolved — her certificate image (Preservica, via the "Jane Etter"/"Lewis Etter" search result set) will settle it.
De Verne R. Etter (Deverne Ray; twin of Verna)17 Mar 1886, Cass, MI (County Births, QP3H-44YL companion entries; record F4L1-TMH)Married Isa Bird Bucklin, 23 Nov 1904, Marcellus (records N367-SJ3 / FCNM-VN4). Isa (1887–1934) is buried at Bly Cemetery, plot 787 (wave 1). Deverne remarried in St. Joseph, Indiana, 31 Aug 1934 (Indiana Marriages, DVQT-SH6Z). Died 16 Feb 1959, Centreville, St. Joseph, MI (Michigan Deaths and Burials, FHYP-ZJT). This upgrades wave 1's "candidate brother" to a record-indexed son of Lewis.
Ellsworth J. EtterBirth record not among the citations (born ~1880s, from marriage dates)Three marriages indexed: Iva I. Burket, 1 Jan 1908, Marcellus (FCNM-RBJ / N3VC-X81); Mrs. Azalia Adams, 14 Oct 1912, Cassopolis (FC82-WZ7 / N32F-X1Y); Lilah Phelps Phillips, 20 Jul 1918, St. Joseph, Berrien, MI (FC47-HYL / VN2F-K89). Died 30 Jan 1946, Mount Pleasant, Isabella, MI — Michigan Death Certificates index (KF3W-8N3, film 005237599, image 129) names Lewis as father; a Preservica "Etter / Ellsworth John / Isabella" certificate matches. His NUMIDENT entry names father Lewis A Etter (6KQV-4KDP).
Ernest L. EtterNov 1892, Volinia — date conflict flagged: County Births index says 9 Nov 1892 (QP7T-XMSH, image 720) while Michigan Births 1867–1902 says 19 Nov 1892 (NQDG-175, image 807). One is a transcription slip; the county register image settles it.Married Stella G. Cooper, 19/22 Feb 1912, Cass / Marcellus, MI (FC82-QQG / N32F-D24 — the two indexes also differ on the day; same flag applies).
Leora B. Etter (the line's subject)29 Apr 1898, Volinia / Cass, MI (Michigan Births, NQXV-45W — indexed there as "Laura B Etter," a misreading; County Births, QP7Z-RKV8, image 139, has "Leora B Etter," same date and father)Married Benjamin T. Cochran, Marcellus Township, Cass, MI, 1921 (Michigan Marriages 1868–1925, N31J-SL2, image 14). Date flag: the Michigan Marriages 1822–1995 index (FC8L-3WD, record 189) gives 1 Aug 1921, while the on-file family date is Aug 10, 1921 (wave 1). License vs. ceremony dates may explain it; the marriage return image settles it. Do not silently change the tree's date.
Lewis A. Etter Jr.5 Jan 1906, Cass, MI (County Births, QP45-B1YX, image 235, indexed as born to Lewis A Etter)Caution: a child born to Lewis in 1906 would be Jane's youngest at roughly age 45+ if she was of Lewis's generation, and the index relationship may reflect a grandson (e.g., Ezra's son) registered under the household. Treat as "Lewis A. Etter Jr., indexed as Lewis Sr.'s son, born 5 Jan 1906" — CANDIDATE as youngest child until the register image or the 1910 census image (where he would appear, age 4) confirms the household position. He later married in St. Joseph, Indiana (Indiana Marriages, D135-B8ZM).

Also indexed but not placed: a Charles E. Etter (1858–1938) at Bly Cemetery is, as wave 1 reasoned, best treated as Lewis's brother (a second son of John C.), not his son — the 1880 household image (sheet 485A) would show whether Charles was also in John's household.

Leora's own records added this pass

7. Leora's exact death day (target 5)

8. NOT FOUND list (searched this pass, not located)

  1. Transcription of either death certificate (Lewis 1928, Jane 1925) — assets located and cited in section 2; images not readable by fetch. Live-browser steps are written out there.
  2. Lewis + Jane marriage record — no conclusive hit in web indexes, Dibean leads, or MIGenWeb Cass (section 4). Expected in FamilySearch Michigan marriage collections, Cass County, ~1878–1886, searchable signed-in.
  3. Any record naming Jane's maiden name — "Cropsey" remains on-file only. Her 1925 death certificate is the designated settler.
  4. Jane's birth, parents, and burial — all pending item 1.
  5. Full 1900/1910 household member lists — index citations exact (section 5); images not retrieved; no free full transcription found on USGenWeb Cass, ldsgenealogy, or archive.org.
  6. Lewis's mother (John C. Etter's wife) — unknown in every source, WikiTree included.
  7. Leora's exact death day — narrowed to ~May 1–2, 1989 by notice dates (section 7).
  8. Ernest L. Etter's exact birth day (9 vs 19 Nov 1892) and marriage day (19 vs 22 Feb 1912) — index-vs-index conflicts, flagged in section 6, settled only by the register images.
  9. Ezra's 1880 birth vs. Lewis's "single" 1880 census status — tension flagged in section 4; unresolved.

9. Highest-value next steps (all free)

  1. Live browser: transcribe Jane's (1925) and Lewis's (1928) Preservica death certificates using the exact asset URLs and steps in section 2. Jane's first — it can confirm Cropsey, name her parents, name an informant, and give her burial in one document.
  2. Signed-in FamilySearch session: pull the 1900 (image 125) and 1910 (image 1073) Volinia census images to list both households in full; pull Leora's obituary image (QGPT-NL2K, image 01127); search Michigan Marriages 1868–1925 for Lewis Etter, Cass, 1878–1886.
  3. Transcribe Verna (Colborn) Etter's 1923 certificate to resolve the Kalamazoo vs. Kalkaska place conflict and to capture the mother's maiden name as Verna's informant reported it — a second, independent shot at Jane's surname.

10. Certificate transcriptions (live browser read, 2026-10-25)

Status update: both certificates located in section 2 have now been opened and read in full in the Michiganology / Archives of Michigan Digital Collections (Preservica) viewer, using the viewer's zoom and full-screen controls. No login and no payment were needed. This section supersedes the "located, NOT yet transcribed" status in sections 0, 2, 3, and 8. Fields are transcribed exactly as written on the forms; anything the reader could not make out is marked illegible, and uncertain readings are flagged as uncertain rather than adopted.

10.1 Jane Etter — Michigan Certificate of Death

What this settles: Jane's father is a Cropsey, which record-supports the family tradition that her maiden name was Cropsey (the certificate itself gives her married name, Etter, and names her father; it does not carry a separate maiden-name field). Her parents are now named in the tree: Elexander Cropsey and Mary Rogers, Leora's great-grandparents. Her birth date and place, death date and place, and burial town and date are all now record facts. The certificate does not name the cemetery; Bly Cemetery in Marcellus is the family cemetery (Lewis's burial there is verified), but Jane's placement there specifically remains to be proven, not assumed.

10.2 Lewis A. Etter — Michigan Certificate of Death

What this settles and what it does not: Lewis's full dates, death place and cause, occupation, and his father John Etter (now named on the certificate itself, with New York State as John's birthplace) are record facts. His mother remains unknown: his own son, reporting his death, wrote "Dont Know." His birthplace is now a flagged two-reading conflict (certificate: Volinia; index and census line: Ohio).

11. Two more Etter certificates read (live browser, 2026-10-25): Gertrude (Fragee) Etter and Charles E. Etter

Status update: the two certificates that earlier passes could only locate or could not find at all have now been opened and read in the Archives of Michigan Digital Collections (Preservica, Death Certificates 1897-1952), live browser read on 2026-10-25. No login and no payment were needed. Fields are transcribed as read; anything the reader could not make out is marked illegible, and uncertain readings are flagged rather than adopted. These two documents close the Gertrude identity question, verify Charles E. Etter as a son of John Etter, and name the children's mother as Mary.

11.1 Gertrude (Fragee) Etter: Michigan Certificate of Death

What this settles:

11.2 Charles E. Etter: Michigan Certificate of Death

What this settles and what it does not:
