Samuel E. Cochran's Other Children — Outcomes (Wave 2)
Researched 2026-10-25. Free public sources only. No Ancestry records were used as evidence (Ancestry search-result snippets were treated as pointers only and are labeled candidate wherever they are the sole support). No paid requests. Deceased people only.
Proven frame (from earlier waves, not re-proven here)
- Samuel E. Cochran (b. 1859, Georgia, per gravestone; d. September 1933, South Bend, IN), lumberman. Wife Florence B. (Carpenter) Cochran (1864 – Nov 6, 1912). Married Dec 17, 1889, Fulton County, IN (Book E, p. 337).
- Children who died young, from the Akron Cemetery family plot (Northwest Section, Row 4): Geneva (1890–1894) and Ralph (1891–1906).
- The 1910 census child list, per prior research: Benjamin T. (age 17 in 1910; b. Dec 23, 1892; fully documented in the main tree), Marie L., Albert G., Martha V., Samuel S., Walter E. No birth years for these five are carried in the tree file, and none were invented here.
- 1921 Polk South Bend directory, 1406 Marine St.: Samuel E. (lumberman) with grown children at home: Samuel S. (machinist), Walter E. (lumber buyer), Martha (machine operator). Marie L. and Albert G. are NOT in the 1921 household.

Methods used in this wave
- Fulton County, IN marriage index (Tombaugh), COCHRAN section read in full: http://genealogy.fulco.lib.in.us/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Marriages_c.pdf
- SortedByName SSDI / Numident transcriptions, targeted name searches: https://sortedbyname.com
- SJCPL Obituary Index (South Bend Tribune): https://www2.sjcpl.org/db/obits/ — see the gap note under "Open routes" below.
- Find a Grave / BillionGraves / PeopleLegacy index searches by name.
- Indiana Legacy (Indiana State Library): https://www.in.gov/library/
- LDS Genealogy South Bend directory catalog: https://ldsgenealogy.com/IN/South-Bend.htm — the only free full-text South Bend directory there is the 1921 Polk (also at Internet Archive, identifier
polksouthbendind00polk). Other years (1919, 1923, 1925, 1927, 1929, 1930–1933) are listed only through MyHeritage, Ancestry, or the Allen County Public Library, none of them free-readable through that catalog. - Hoosier State Chronicles (South Bend News-Times, 1913–1922, free): https://newspapers.library.in.gov/
- General web searches per child by full name plus South Bend / Indiana. These returned only unrelated same-name people; the noise is not repeated per child below.
1. Marie L. Cochran — NOT FOUND beyond the 1910 census list
- Verified: named in the 1910 census child list only (prior research; see frame above).
- Not in the 1921 household at 1406 Marine St. By 1921 she had either married and left under a married name, moved away, or died. No free record distinguishes these.
- No Fulton County marriage. The Tombaugh Fulton County marriage index COCHRAN section was read in full; the only entry for Samuel's family is Samuel E. himself (to Florence B. Carpenter, Dec 17, 1889, E 337). No marriage entry for Marie (nor for any of the other four children).
- No SSDI / Numident hit at SortedByName under "Cochran, Marie" for Indiana.
- No grave-index hit (Find a Grave / BillionGraves / PeopleLegacy searches by name returned nothing matching).
- Birth date/place, marriage, spouse, children, occupation, death, burial: none found in any free source tried.
2. Albert G. Cochran — CANDIDATE ONLY (California), unverified
Everything below rests on Ancestry family-tree search snippets (pointers, not an approved source) plus one people-search aggregator listing. None of it is confirmed by a free record. It is recorded here because two separate tree listings agree with each other and the outline fits the known facts (Albert is absent from the 1921 South Bend household, consistent with an early move west — consistency is not proof).
- Candidate: Albert Guy Cochran, married Emma Jane Vanlue.
- Candidate children:
- Albert G. Cochran, b. Dec 17, 1919, South Bend, IN; d. Jul 8, 1998, Lucerne Valley, CA.
- Joan Lea Cochran, b. Nov 17, 1932, Los Angeles, CA; d. Nov 14, 2008, Tarrant, TX. Joan's listing names her father as Albert Guy Cochran and mother as Emma Jane Vanlue, independently matching the first listing.
- A people-search aggregator lists a deceased "Albert G Cochran" at Lucerne Valley, CA — consistent with the son's death place above, but aggregators are not verification.
- Not confirmed by any free record: no WWI draft index entry, California Death Index entry, or SSDI entry for Albert (father or son) was located through free routes in this wave.
- No Fulton County marriage (index read in full; see Marie section).
- Verdict: plausible California branch, candidate grade only. The records that would settle it (California Death Index full entry, the son's SSDI record, a 1917–1918 draft card) were not reachable free in this pass.
3. Martha V. Cochran — verified through 1921 only; nothing after
- Verified: 1921 Polk South Bend directory — Martha Cochran, machine operator, living at 1406 Marine St. with her father and brothers Samuel S. and Walter E.
- No Fulton County marriage (index read in full).
- No SSDI / Numident hit at SortedByName under "Cochran, Martha" for Indiana. If she married after 1921, her death would be indexed under an unknown married name.
- No grave-index hit under her maiden name.
- Birth date/place, marriage, spouse, children, death, burial: not found in free sources. Last confirmed fact: South Bend, 1921, machine operator.
4. Samuel S. Cochran — verified through 1921 only; nothing after
- Verified: 1921 Polk South Bend directory — Samuel S. Cochran, machinist, living at 1406 Marine St.
- No Fulton County marriage (index read in full).
- No WWI draft registration entry located through free indexes searched (he was of draft age for 1917–1918 if born in the mid-1890s; no card surfaced).
- No SSDI / Numident hit at SortedByName under "Cochran, Samuel S" for Indiana.
- No grave-index hit.
- Birth date/place, marriage, spouse, children, death, burial: not found in free sources. Last confirmed fact: South Bend, 1921, machinist.
5. Walter E. Cochran — verified through 1921 only; nothing after
- Verified: 1921 Polk South Bend directory — Walter E. Cochran, lumber buyer (his father's trade), living at 1406 Marine St.
- No Fulton County marriage (index read in full).
- No WWI draft registration entry located through free indexes searched.
- No SSDI / Numident hit at SortedByName under "Cochran, Walter" for Indiana.
- No grave-index hit.
- Birth date/place, marriage, spouse, children, death, burial: not found in free sources. Last confirmed fact: South Bend, 1921, lumber buyer.
Samuel E. Cochran's own census households, 1900–1930
Stated plainly, per year. No household for any of these four years was located through a free readable route in this wave or the earlier ones.
- 1900 — NOT FOUND. The family had left Fulton County before 1900: the Fulton County 1900 census contains zero Cochrans (Line A pass). Where the family was living in 1900 is unknown.
- 1910 — household NOT PINNED. The child list used across the tree (Benjamin T., Marie L., Albert G., Martha V., Samuel S., Walter E.) is attributed to the 1910 census in prior research, but the household itself — address, enumeration district, full composition — was not recovered through a free readable route. Note the trap: the SBAGS St. Joseph County census index for 1910 holds a separate Cochran cluster (Chris C., Edith, Edward, Etta, Harry, Hazel, John L., Viola F.). That is a different family. Do not merge.
- 1920 — NOT FOUND. The nearest anchor is the 1921 city directory (1406 Marine St.), one year after the census.
- 1930 — NOT FOUND. The nearest later anchor is Samuel's death in September 1933 at 1750 Twyckenham, South Bend (Tribune items Sep 23 and 25, 1933, per the dossier). Whether 1750 Twyckenham was also his 1930 address is unknown.
Open routes (not exhausted, all free)
- SJCPL Obituary Index, per-child queries. The index is form-driven (advanced search at https://www2.sjcpl.org/db/obits/searchadv); the text-fetch tools used in this wave cannot submit its forms, and two attempts errored out. Per-child queries for Marie, Albert, Martha, Samuel S., and Walter have therefore NOT actually been run. This is the single most promising untested free route for South Bend deaths and needs a live-browser session.
- Signed-in FamilySearch census search (free account, Joel's). The standard route to the 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 households and to WWI draft cards for Albert, Samuel S., and Walter.
- Live Find a Grave enumeration of Saint Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger (Cemetery ID 199742, https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/199742), where the next two Cochran generations are buried. Two attempts on 2026-10-25 failed on browser connection loss; the children's burials there are untested, not excluded.
- Hoosier State Chronicles full-text search of the South Bend News-Times (1913–1922) for marriage and death notices naming the children: https://newspapers.library.in.gov/
- South Bend city directories for other years (1913–1933) via the Allen County Public Library or any newly digitized Internet Archive copy, to trace when each child leaves the Marine St. household.
Bottom line
- Marie L.: nothing beyond the 1910 census child list.
- Albert G.: a coherent California candidate family (wife Emma Jane Vanlue; son Albert G. 1919–1998 of Lucerne Valley; daughter Joan Lea 1932–2008 of Los Angeles / Tarrant, TX), supported only by Ancestry tree snippets. Candidate, not verified.
- Martha V., Samuel S., Walter E.: verified only as far as the 1921 South Bend directory (machine operator, machinist, lumber buyer at 1406 Marine St.). Nothing after 1921 was found in any free source.
- Fulton County marriages: definitively negative for all five children (index read in full).
- Samuel's households for 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930: none pinned through free readable routes; stated per year above.
